The Georgian aviation sector has experienced remarkable growth in 2024, with the first 10 months of the year marking a historic milestone for the country’s airports. A total of 105 airlines operated flights at Georgian airports, with an impressive frequency of approximately 670 flights per week. This surge in air traffic has contributed to a record number of flights, cementing 2024 as a banner year for Georgian aviation.
One of the standout achievements this year has been the return of major international airlines to the Georgian market after years of absence. Austrian Airlines and British Airways, two renowned carriers, resumed operations in Georgia, reconnecting the country with key European hubs. This influx of new airlines and the establishment of new air routes have significantly bolstered the country’s connectivity, enhancing its appeal as a travel destination for both business and leisure.
In parallel with the increase in air traffic, the development of Georgia’s airport infrastructure is undergoing substantial transformation. The government has outlined ambitious plans for the construction of a new international airport in Tbilisi, which will be built on the former Vaziani military airfield. This modern facility will dramatically enhance the country’s aviation capacity, with the potential to expand the existing Tbilisi International Airport’s capacity from 5 million passengers to a staggering 20 million passengers annually. The development of this new airport is expected to further elevate Georgia’s position as a regional aviation hub and facilitate the growth of tourism and business opportunities.
Additionally, Kutaisi International Airport, another key gateway to Georgia, is set to undergo significant upgrades. The airport’s infrastructure will be enhanced to accommodate an increased capacity, with plans to raise its passenger handling capabilities from 1.7 million to 5 million passengers per year. These developments at both Tbilisi and Kutaisi airports underscore the country’s commitment to improving its aviation infrastructure and catering to the growing demand for air travel.
