New road to Gudauri will open in 2025

According to the Roads Department of Georgia, a 5-kilometer section of the new Kvesheti-Kobi road, which connects to Gudauri, is set to open in 2025.

The Kvesheti-Kobi highway spans 23 kilometers and is divided into two main sections. The first, known as Lot 1, features a 9-kilometer tunnel constructed by China Railway Tunnel Group Co. The tunnel, completed in 2024, came with a price tag of 909 million GEL, and the overall progress of this section currently stands at 79%.

Lot 2 stretches 12.7 kilometers and involves the construction of 5 bridges, 4 tunnels, and the rehabilitation of an existing bridge, at a cost of 316.7 million GEL. The tunnels measure 1,541 m, 194 m, 388 m, and 299 m, while the combined length of the bridges reaches 1.6 km. One standout bridge will be 426 meters long with an arch height of 166 meters, making it the tallest bridge in Georgia. Other planned bridges will measure 322 m, 218 m, 148 m, and 42 m. This section is being built by China Railway 23rd Bureau Group, with construction progress currently at 50%.

When asked by BMG about the full completion of the highway, the Roads Department confirmed that the access road to Gudauri will open in 2025 but did not specify a timeline for the full 23-kilometer highway’s opening.
