The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture reports that, as of September 17, a total of 45,000 tonnes of grapes have been processed in Georgia’s Kakheti region.
Harvested grapes are currently being stored across the municipalities of Dedoplistskaro, Sighnaghi, Gurjaani, Lagodekhi, Telavi, and Kvareli. So far, around 3,000 winegrowers have delivered their harvest to local wineries.
According to the Ministry, of the processed grapes, nearly 20,500 tonnes are Saperavi and about 18,400 tonnes are Rkatsiteli, with the remainder consisting of other grape varieties.
The Ministry also noted that nearly 1,200 tonnes of hail-damaged grapes have been salvaged and are being purchased by the state-owned Crop Management Company LLC at a rate of 1 GEL per kilogram. The damage was caused by heavy rain and hail on September 12, which affected up to 300 hectares of vineyards in Telavi and Akhmeta municipalities.
Currently, around 400 wine companies and cellars are registered with the Harvest Coordination Headquarters, 142 of which are actively engaged in the harvest. The Headquarters operates 24/7 to support affected winegrowers and ensure uninterrupted collection and processing.
