According to Tamar Ioseliani, Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, the ongoing reforms and transformation of Georgian Railways over the next two years will revolutionise the network, transforming it into a swift, efficient, and competitive system ready to handle increased cargo volumes.
“Georgian Railways is currently rehabilitating the main railway line, which will significantly reduce travel times across the country for both passenger and freight services. As the Prime Minister of Georgia has highlighted, starting from August this summer, it will be possible to reach Batumi from Tbilisi in just four hours, compared to the previous 5.5 hours on the Tbilisi-Batumi route,” Ioseliani explained.
She also noted that modern electronic systems are being introduced to further enhance services.
Furthermore, Ioseliani announced that additional train services will be introduced on the Tbilisi-Kutaisi and Tbilisi-Akhaltsikhe routes, with new trains set to improve connectivity. Notably, travel time to Akhaltsikhe will be halved, reducing from six hours to three.
Regarding freight transport, Ioseliani assured that significant developments are underway.
“This marks the first time since Georgia’s independence that such substantial investment has been made in our railway infrastructure. This is a clear indication that we will become a reliable partner along the Middle Corridor,” she emphasised.
