Daily passenger train service between Georgia and Azerbaijan is set to resume on May 26, the Georgian Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development announced.
Rail connections between the two countries were suspended in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions. According to the ministry, the decision to restore the route follows an agreement aimed at deepening strategic cooperation and regional partnership between Georgia and Azerbaijan.
Authorities emphasized the significance of reopening the railway link, especially since the land border has remained closed to passenger traffic for the past six years. The renewed train service is expected to provide an important alternative to air travel, enhancing transportation access and regional connectivity.
The ministry also noted that the restored rail connection will support tourism, trade, and economic cooperation. As Azerbaijan continues to be one of Georgia’s key tourism markets, officials expect the service to boost visitor numbers and positively impact the hospitality sector and local economies along the railway corridor.
In addition, the return of regular passenger rail operations is expected to strengthen ties between the two nations, promote regional stability, and demonstrate the South Caucasus region’s commitment to modern and efficient transport services.
